Very commonly these days you hear from doctors or people around, that this is a diet and lifestyle disorder. Your diet needs to be corrected. Your lifestyle needs to be modified
And you keep wondering
I keep a check on number of calories I am taking in, I check all the ingredients over a packet before buying, I am not a junk food lover, I take a nutritious diet, I have cut down sugars in my food, I am very particular about vegetable oils used in cooking, I drink water all day still I have high blood pressure/cholesterol/Thyroid/unwanted extra kgs/digestion/constipation issues at this age.
What is possibly going wrong?
Ayurveda says that no medicine can equate food. Food is called Mahabhaishaj i.e Food is Medicine
Food is one of the Upstambh (pillars) of life
So why should we run after medicines and not correct our diet
“Khana laga de?’ comes a voice a from the kitchen to which you reply, “Abhi 9 kahan baje hai”
This is what we have become
Instead of following our hunger clock we follow the clock on the wall
According to Acharya Vagbhatta, ideal time to consume meals is when your body is light, you have pure belchings (without any foul smell or taste), when you feel hungry, after the elimination of faeces.
Children today don’t ease themselves in the morning in the rush to go to school. No surprise if they are falling ill very frequently
Ayurveda believes it is more harmful is to eat when earlier meal isn’t digested.
Eating after bathing
Work from home is going on and it has become a common practice that you bath in the afternoon sometimes at 3 or 4 pm. Even children do it on weekends
Make chapatis put it a hot case and immediately eat after. Maybe you will consume 2 chapatis, Now eat them right after they come from the hot tava, you will definitely consume 3 chapatis
So this is what freshly prepared food does to your agni. What would reheated and frozen food do
The gadgets in our hand or before our eyes while eating have made us forget that food in the plate needs to be appreciated. The smell and taste of the food needs to be savoured.
Eating without doing Ninda of food
Food should be consumed without abusing, making faces, scolding or complaining about food. The emotions are strong enough to hamper digestion.
This is what usually children do today
Ayurveda says you should eat food without doing its Ninda because digestion starts from the moment you think about food. Hunger rises when we hear our favorite meal is prepared. So instead of finding faults, appreciate the food in your plate. Your stomach and partner both will be happy
Have a portion of each of these by equating them in calories/fat
Still, they will have a different impact after digestion. Ayurveda explains at micro level which one is laghu, vidahi, snigdha
While eating we have to care of the properties of food
The specific gravity is different of different foods
Before learning how to fast we should learn what to eat
Balanced diet (Food with all six flavours) – Even today if you see traditional thalis served have all the flavours/ras, in them. You have rice, chapati, sabzi, pickle, ladoo everything in one plate
If you are fond of that extra spoon of ghee, pour it over Roti/Khichdi in place of dal/sabzi. The fatty acids of ghee help in digesting carbs. Ayurveda says properties of ghee and carbs are similar. This may be why ghee rich traditional foods have grains: Halwa, ladoo, Baati, Churma
When rice is combined with dal, the net GI (glycemic index) of rice drops that why Khichdi in our households still enjoys a favorite place.
Ayurveda says that reheated food if consumed produces Ama/toxins in the body. Imagine what a single bowl of Dal Makhani at our table of a plush hotel can do in our body. In big facilities, it is stored at -25 degrees and straight away defrosted, heated and served
Not against that you should not use leftovers and waste food. But if you want to reheat, take it out from the refrigerator long time before exposing it to the heat. Let it reach temperature close to room temp
